Rock stethoscope to control mining accidents

A stethoscope-like instrument will soon be deployed in mines for predicting movement of rocks during excavation and minimize the risk of mining accidents.

Developed by IIT Kharagpur researchers, the "Instrumented Rock Bolt" can forecast vital information of rock movement before any unwanted accident occurs.

Field trials at Asansol coal mines of West Bengal have yielded positive results after which experiments would soon be done in the copper mines of Madhya Pradesh.

"The instrument will collect data on the health of the rock just like a stethoscope. It will then be analyzed using geocomputing technology. People who are excavating for mining or making a tunnel for a hydropower project will then know which rock is risky and to what extent," Prof Debasis Deb of the department of mining engineering at IIT Kharagpur told PTI.

A part of this project is funded by the Central Mine Planning and Design Institute (CMPDI), a subsidiary of Coal India Limited.

IIT-Kgp and CMPDI have already filed a joint patent for the instrument.

"We are getting good response but the technology needs further validation before it is released in the market for commercial use. We hope that the entire system will be ready in the next two years," the scientist said.

IIT-Kgp researchers are also collaborating with fellows from the MIT who are currently employing the same methods for shale gas exploration.

Nearly 100 People killed in landslide at Myanmar mining site

Soldiers and rescue workers search for the bodies of miners killed in a landslide in Myanmar's Kachin state.

Nearly 100 bodies have been pulled from a landslide near a jade mine in Myanmar's war-torn northern Kachin state and an estimated 100 people are still missing, a rescue official said.
The landslide happened in the early hours of Saturday in Hpakant, an area that produces some of the world's highest-quality jade but where the mines and dump sites for debris are rife with hazards and landslides are not uncommon, though rarely this deadly.
The disaster happened at about 3.30am local time and lasted just a couple of minutes, said Mr Zaw Moe Htet, a gems trader whose village overlooks the devastated area.
"Even people living in villages farther away could hear the cries of those who rushed to the scene," he told Agence France-Presse.
Video footage of the area shot on Saturday shows men carrying several bodies slung in blankets as a crowd in a dusty plain near the village of Sai Tung watched.
Those killed were thought to have been mainly itinerant miners, who scratch a living scavenging through mountains of waste rubble dumped by mechanical diggers used by mining companies at the centre of a secretive multi-billion-dollar jade industry.
The massive landslide crushed dozens of shanty huts, home to an unknown number of people.
The state-run Global New Light of Myanmar newspaper said yesterday that many of the miners were sleeping in the huts when the landslide occurred.
An official with the Hpakant Township Fire Brigade told Reuters by telephone yesterday that 99 bodies had been recovered by late yesterday afternoon and that this number was likely to rise.
"We are sure the death toll will go up since many are still missing," he said.
The official, who asked not to be named because he was not authorised to speak to the media, said the accident occurred near a mining site controlled by Triple One Jade Mining.
It was unclear as to what triggered the landslide in the remote and mountainous region, which is almost entirely off-limits to foreigners.
A lawmaker also confirmed the figure. Mr Zaw Htay, a senior official from the President's Office, said rescue efforts were being carried out by the local authorities.
Officials said they have little hope of pulling people out from under the rubble alive.
"We are seeing only dead bodies," said Ms Nilar Myint, an official with the local administrative authorities in Hpakant. She added that because the men were mostly migrant workers, the authorities were struggling to identify those killed.
Myanmar's jade industry is extremely opaque and much of the jade mined in Hpakant is believed to be smuggled to China, where the stone is highly valued.
According to researchers from environmental advocacy group Global Witness, the value of jade production in Myanmar is estimated to have been as much as US$31 billion (S$44 billion) last year.
Many of the jade mines are connected to government officials, members of armed ethnic groups and cronies with close ties to the former military government, the group found.
Safety measures at the mines and surrounding dumping sites are minimal.
"These crony-owned mining companies piled this giant mine dump near the village without any consideration for the safety of the village," the fire official said.

Coal mine fire in northeast China kills 21

The entrance of a coal mine where a fire accident happened in Jixi, northeast China's Heilongjiang Province, Nov. 21, 2015.

Twenty-one workers were killed today when a fire engulfed a state-owned coal mine in China's northeast Heilongjiang province, one of the deadliest accidents to hit the world's largest coal producer.

One missing mine worker was located safely.

Rescuers have found bodies of 21 workers after a coal mine caught fire in Jixi city of the province late last evening, state-run Xinhua news agency reported.

A total of 38 miners were working down in the shaft when the fire broke out at the mine in Jixi city operated by the state-owned Heilongjiang Longmay Mining Holding Group. 16 of them managed to escape.

The government said the fire was under control and no secondary disaster had been reported.

President of the mining group Hao Fukun said rescuers could reach the missing miner by midnight. The report, however, did not mention the condition of the missing person who was safely traced.

The communication, power supply and hoisting system in the shaft have been resumed, Hao said, adding the ventilation condition has been significantly improved.

The coal mine, with a production capacity of two million tonnes every year, is fully licensed, the report said.

Accidents have become common as energy hungry China, world's largest producer of coal, depends a lot on coal supplies to fire its economy.

This is the deadliest mine incident since April this year when a water leak at a coal mine killed 21 people in the northern city of Datong in Shanxi province.

In August, 10 people were killed in two separate accidents at coal mines in China. In October, one person was killed in Shandong province.

India to auction eight coal blocks in January 2016

The Indian government today kick-started the process for the fourth round of e-auctioning of eight coal blocks, which is slated for January 18-22 next year.

The last three rounds of auction have generated proceeds of more than Rs 3 lakh crore, which would be realised over 30 years by states where the mines are located.

"It has been decided to auction eight Schedule III coal mines earmarked for non-regulated sectors like, iron and steel, cement and captive power plants in the fourth tranche.

The e-auction for these mines will be held from January 18 to January 22, 2016," Coal Secretary Anil Swarup said addressing the media here.

Directions have been issued to Joint Secretary, Coal, Vivek Bhardwaj, who is the nominated authority to conduct the auction, and the notice inviting tenders will be issued tomorrow, Swarup said.

"Commencement of sale of tender document will start from December 31 while the vesting order by the nominated authority to successful bidders will be issued by March 10," the Secretary said.

The coal blocks to be put under the hammer include Brahmapuri and Suliyari in Madhya Pradesh, Bundu and Gondulpura in Jharkhand, Gondkhari and Khappa & Extn in Maharashtra and Jaganathpur A and Jaganathpur B in West Bengal.

Together these mines are expected to have total reserves of 1,143Mt, with peak production estimated at 12.9Mt.

Asked how much the government plans to raise from this fresh round of auction, the Secretary said the same depends on the response from bidders.

Swarup said 34 blocks had been allocated or auctioned under Schedule II (either producing or likely to produce mines), of which one is under litigation and seven of them have recorded over 5-MT output.

The rest, he said, are likely to start production "in next two to three months" as all issues including necessary clearances, stamp duty, handing over of assets etc have "fortunately been resolved on the intervention of Prime Minister who himself reviewed the projects".

Mining leases have been granted in 29 cases and remaining four will also get it soon, he said.

The Supreme Court in September last year had cancelled allocation of 204 coal mines to companies without auction.

The Secretary said Coal India is "well on way of achieving 550 million tonne coal production target" for the current fiscal and has crossed the 300-MT output mark this week.
